What does sustainability mean when nature is understood not merely as a resource but as a bearer of subjectivity? What underlying assumptions shape our current thinking about sustainability, and where are its limits? Madeleine Hugai demonstrates that prevailing concepts are heavily human-centered and thus overlook important aspects. As an alternative, she develops an expanded concept of sustainability that views individual beings in nature as autonomous and valuable—a philosophical reflection dedicated to current environmental issues and aimed at anyone interested in the fundamentals of ecological responsibility beyond disciplinary boundaries.
