Public Lecture Competition: The 2014 INSPIRE Lecture on Literature and Sustainability
Conditions of Entry
GENERAL
- Entrants should submit the text of a half-hour public lecture that considers the potential relationship between literary-critical study and the sustainability debate.
- Submissions should be between c. 2,500 and c. 3,000 words in length.
- Material submitted should seek to achieve the highest academic standards. However, submissions must also strive to be accessible to an audience that may range from interested lay- people to professional literary critics and sustainability practitioners.
- Entries should be submitted as an email attachment to [email protected]. Attachments should be in MS Word or MS Word-compatible format. Emails should be titled ‘Public Lecture Competition’ in the subject line.
- Entry is free but must be accompanied by an official entry form (which should be included as a separate attachment). A copy of the entry form can be downloaded from www.tsd.ac.uk/en/inspire/publiclecturecompetition/.
- Entrants should provide a brief biographical note in the space provided on the official entry form.
- Only one entry per individual is permitted.
- Alterations cannot be made to entries once they have been submitted.
- An email acknowledging receipt of submission will be provided.
- The closing date for entries is 28 February 2014.
- The winner of the competition will be announced in March 2014
- The winner of the competition will be invited to deliver her/his submission as ‘The 2014 INSPIRE Lecture on Literature and Sustainability’ at the 2014 Hay Festival of Literature and the Arts (Hay- on-Wye, 22 May–1 June 2014). The lecture will be followed by a public discussion between the competition winner and Jane Davidson, Director of the Institute of Sustainable Practice and Resource Effectiveness, University of Wales Trinity Saint David and former Welsh Minister of Sustainability. No alternative prize will be available and no other prizes will be offered.
- The author of the winning entry will need to (a) arrange and (b) cover the costs for her/his own travel and any necessary accommodation relating to the lecture event itself. However, if the author is unwaged, ASLE UKI will support costs with a travel bursary, at its discretion.
- The author of the winning entry may be asked to take part in publicity relating to the competition, as appropriate.
- ELIGIBILITY
- Submissions may come from writers of any nationality and from any country, so long as:
- they are written in English;
- they have not already been published (in printed format or on-line);
- the author is alive;
- the material submitted is the original work of the author cited on the associated entry form and that any quotation from or use of another author’s work is clearly identified as such;
- the material submitted is not a translation of someone else’s work.
- Employees of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David are not eligible to enter the competition.
JUDGING
The competition will be judged by: Professor Brycchan Carey (Association for the Study of Literature and Environment, UK & Ireland), Dr Lucy Collins (Association for the Study of Literature and Environment, UK & Ireland), Dr Matthew Jarvis (Anthony Dyson Poetry Fellow, University of Wales Trinity Saint David and Dr Paul Wright (Head of the School of Cultural Studies, University of Wales Trinity Saint David). Filter judge/s may also be used. The organisers of the competition reserve the right to alter the judging panel if necessary.
The decision of the judges is final and no correspondence concerning the result of the competition will be entered into.
COPYRIGHT
Copyright of all entries will remain with their respective authors. However, organisers of the competition reserve the right to arrange first publication of the winning entry.
