Escritos antibélicos [Antiwar Writings] by José Manuel Marrero Henríquez

Nopólemo does not take pleasure in the atrocities of war, and for that reason he rejects viewing everyday life as subject to opposing choices—either this or that, black or white, with me or against me, truth or lie, good or bad. Life is blurred and made up of countless shades of gray. The greater the precision, the greater the blurriness, the more nuance, the more complexity. Everything else consists of crude simplifications for the consumption of impassioned masses. In Anti-war Writings and in the stories that happen to Nopólemo, humor, irony, sarcasm, lyricism, and comedy tear down the hegemony of epic imagination and take their rightful place in everyday life, to the benefit of literature and of society.
