What happens to literature when the Anthropocene is no longer merely a descriptive category, but a profound transformation of the ways in which we know, feel, imagine and inhabit the world? How can the contemporary novel respond to a crisis that calls into question the boundaries between the human and the non-human, nature and culture, matter and discourse? At the core of debates within the environmental humanities and theoretical reflections on the Anthropocene, this book brings together ecocriticism and new materialisms to investigate the epistemological and formal changes triggered by the current ecological crisis, while also offering conceptual tools for its understanding.
Through a comparative analysis of narrative strategies in contemporary European and Anglophone fiction — from the reconfiguration of realism and the use of metalepsis to forms of the ecological sublime and the reorganization of temporal and spatial scales — the literary field emerges as a critical space that renders the performative and processual dimensions of the Anthropocene thinkable, while also serving as an ongoing site of exploration of the relationships between knowledge and the environment.
