The editors of a volume under contract with Routledge’s Environmental Literature, Culture and Media series are seeking a 7,000-word essay on Monique Roffey’s The Mermaid of Black Conch. The volume focuses on rewritten water myths in English and situates itself in current debates in the blue and environmental humanities. It grows out of an international conference on the topic that the editors held at Lund University in June 2026. Individual contributions link these debates to specific instances of rewritten or revised water myths in contemporary literature, art, and media. A first draft of the essay will be due May 31, 2027, for a collaborative online peer review session held with the editors and other contributors to the volume. Feedback will be provided after that, and final drafts will be due in late 2027.

If interested, please send a 250-word abstract and short bio to the editors, Barbara Barrow at Lund University ([email protected]) and Monika Class at Catholic University Eichstätt-Ingolstadt ([email protected]) by November 15, 2026. Please also feel free to reach out with any queries or questions.
