Landscapes of Wine in Literature and Cinema Conference International Conference

Grumello del Monte (BG) – June 6 / 8, 2016

Screen Shot 2016-03-21 at 6.07.21 PMThe Centro Studi Città e Territorio, in collaboration with the municipality of Grumello del Monte (BG – Italy), presents “Landscapes of Wine in Italian Literature and Cinema”, an international interdiciplinary conference. The conference will be structured in different sessions and open to scholars specialized in cinema, Italian literature (both in standard Italian and in dialects), Latin and Greek literature, or possibly other foreign language literature, and interested, within their contexts, in the knowledge, the protection and the valorization of landscape heritage.

The conference will be held at the hall of the municipal building of Grumello del Monte, on June 6, 7, and 8, 2016. The three keynote speakers will be: Licia Canton (PhD, Canadian writer and founding editor-in-chief of Accenti Magazine), Ernesto Di Renzo (Anthropologist, coordinator of the Master in “Food culture and culinary traditions”, University of Rome “Tor Vergata”) and Silvia Ross (Senior Lecturer in Italian Literature and Culture, University College Cork).

The opening lecture will be held by Carlo Tosco (Professor of History of Architecture at Politecnico di Torino, consultant for the nomination of wine-landscapes of Piemonte to the World Heritage List UNESCO, and author, among others, of the book Petrarca: paesaggi, città, architetture).

In order to participate, please send an abstract on one of topics listed below (in Aims of the conference) by March 31, 2016. A scienti c committee will select the contributions for the conference sessions. The selected contributors will be requested to send a full paper by September 30th, 2016 for the publication of the conference proceedings. The papers will have to follow the editorial norms and will be submitted to double blind peer review selection. The book will be published in the series Confronti by the Centro Studi Città e Territorio and Debatte Publisher.

The conference is under the auspices of Department of Humanities of University “Ca’ Foscari” Venezia, of “Scuola di Specializzazione in Beni Architettonici e del Paesaggio” of Politecnico di Torino and of the Depart- ment of Romance and Latin American Studies, Faculty of Humanities, of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem (more partnerships are forthcoming).

Aims of the conference

The conference aims to deepen the multidisciplinary analysis of wine-landscapes, which was inaugurated at the 2014 conference, and to investigate the multiple aspects of the interaction between literature, cinema and wine-landscapes. The Municipality of Grumello del Monte (BG), which promotes this conference with the scien- ti c and logistic support of the Centro Studi Città e Territorio, intends to follow up and carry out actions that improve the research on art expressions connected with the wine material culture. Both the art expressions and the material culture are so rich and important for Italy.

From Renzo’s vineyard in I promessi sposi to Mario Soldati’s explorations of Vino al vino (and not only), from Greek lyric poets to Boccaccio’s Decameron, physical and metaphorical landscapes give the texts a deeper meaning, arising anthropological questions and interpretations. Cultivations, architectures, symposia, work organization, tastes and sensations, local values appear and are explicitly present in several texts from different ages and cultures.

We accept contributions on cinema from any country, on Italian (even in dialects), Latin and Greek literatures, and possibly even on other foreign language literatures. Suitable sources, to be analyzed and interpreted, could be sacred scriptures or hagiographies, ancient or modern essays, poetry, ction, reportage, theater, musical lyrics and movies. The contributors are free to choose a diachronic or a synchronic approach, but in any case, they must focus on historical and material context, beyond the formalistic and stylistic features of the writer or the artistic movement they are discussing. Particularly welcome will be comparative (literature and cinema, Italian literature and foreign literatures, and so on), and ecocritical contributions.
